Section 135 of the Doctrine and Covenants, first printed in the 1844 edition, records that they \"were shot in Carthage jail, on the 27th of June, 1844, about five o'clock p.m., by an armed mob.\"\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\n\u003ctime datetime=\"1845-05\"\u003eMay 1845\u003c\/time\u003e: Five men were tried in Carthage for the killings. Hinckley dedicated the renovated complex. The next day a hearing on the riot charge was held at the hotel, and that evening the brothers were taken to the jail. Sources give only the street corner, so the marker shows the corner rather than the building itself.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003eCarthage Jail stands on Walnut Street, a few blocks northwest of the square. Tours start at the visitors' center at 310 Buchanan Street and go through four rooms, two on each floor. On the plaza leading to the jail stands Dee Jay Bawden's statue of the brothers, Hyrum behind Joseph with an arm around him. It was first planned as two separate statues.
