Peculiar People started in 2023 while I was serving a mission in San Antonio, Texas. The name comes from Peter's description of the Saints as "a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people" — members who keep their covenants without making a show of it, and are fine looking a little old-fashioned for it.

We make apparel with original line art of Latter-day Saint temples, made one temple at a time and printed on heavier, better-made garments. Most members want to talk about the gospel but don't know how to open the door. A shirt someone asks about is an easier start than a knock on one.

From the Founders

You wear Peculiar People because it reminds you of an important moment. The day you got married, where you got an answer to a prayer you needed answered, where you first felt something you couldn't explain away.

Every design we make is made to do two things:

  1. Remind you of something special to you
  2. Prompt others to ask you about it

In order for this to work, our clothing needs to be the first thing you reach for, which is why we have worked hard to ensure our fabrics, build quality, and prints are premium and extremely comfortable.

The more you wear, the more you share. All it takes is one question. "What's that on your shirt?"

Evan & Bailee, founders of Peculiar People

Whitingham, Vermont

Born Here
Brigham Young, on . He was the ninth child of John and Abigail Howe Young, who had moved the family up from Hopkinton, Massachusetts, that January.

How Long They Stayed
About three years. Brigham was not quite three when the Youngs left for New York, and he grew up there.

On Town Hill
A 12-foot monument of light Barre granite stands in the town park. Its inscription says it was "erected by descendants of Brigham Young in cooperation with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints."

What Happened Here

  • : John and Abigail, called Nabby, brought their children to Whitingham. They were devout Methodists.
  • : The family moved on to Sherburne, in Chenango County, New York.
  • : President George Albert Smith dedicated the monument on Town Hill before a crowd the Church News put at about 1,000. Four days later, in Washington, he dedicated the Brigham Young statue in the U.S. Capitol, carved by his grandson Mahonri Young.
  • : For the 200th birthday, about 180 people from around New England met at the small Whitingham Municipal Center in Jacksonville.

On the Map

  1. The traditional birth site is on a hill road west of Town Hill, where a small marker stands in a private front yard. Just where in Whitingham he was born has long been disputed, so the exact spot isn't known; this is the place tradition gives, not a proven one.
  2. The 1950 monument is in the park on Town Hill. Four of Brigham's grandsons drew the original sketch for it.
  3. Jacksonville, the village in the northeast part of town, is home to the Whitingham Municipal Center, where the 2001 birthday program was held.

Trivia

  • The Whitingham circuit was one of the first three Methodist circuits organized in Vermont.
  • A roadside marker on Route 8, described in the Friend in 1971, pointed visitors "southward up the steep hill" to the birthplace.
  • Colonel Nathan Whiting petitioned New York for a township "by the Name of Whitingham," and the patent came through on . The hill where tradition places his birth has a name of its own now: Brigham's Hill.

FAQ

I get this one a lot, and I thought about it before I drew the first one. These are architectural drawings of a building, not anything that happens inside it. No slogans, nothing that turns the temple into a punchline. If you'd put a framed temple photo in your living room, this is that same idea on cotton.

No. We are an independent company. Peculiar People is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Our prints are made to last. To make sure they do, use no bleach and no fabric softener, which coats the fibers and dulls the print over time. Don't iron over the design. You can wash it before the first wear to get the loose surface dye off, but you don't have to.

Original line art, made by us, one at a time. Every drawing gets checked against verified references before we add it to our collection.

Yes. Ward and stake temple trips, mission reunions, family reunions. Email support@peculiarpeopleco.com with the temple, the garment, and roughly how many people, and I'll get back to you with a price.

An SVG of the temple line art for $4.95. Same drawing that goes on the shirts. It's a vector, so it scales to any size without going soft at the edges, and it opens in Cricut, Illustrator, Figma, or anything else that reads vectors.
