Peculiar People started in 2023 while I was serving a mission in San Antonio, Texas. The name comes from Peter's description of the Saints as "a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people" — members who keep their covenants without making a show of it, and are fine looking a little old-fashioned for it.

We make apparel with original line art of Latter-day Saint temples, made one temple at a time and printed on heavier, better-made garments. Most members want to talk about the gospel but don't know how to open the door. A shirt someone asks about is an easier start than a knock on one.

From the Founders

You wear Peculiar People because it reminds you of an important moment. The day you got married, where you got an answer to a prayer you needed answered, where you first felt something you couldn't explain away.

Every design we make is made to do two things:

  1. Remind you of something special to you
  2. Prompt others to ask you about it

In order for this to work, our clothing needs to be the first thing you reach for, which is why we have worked hard to ensure our fabrics, build quality, and prints are premium and extremely comfortable.

The more you wear, the more you share. All it takes is one question. "What's that on your shirt?"

Gilbert Arizona Temple

Location
Gilbert, Arizona. A 15.4-acre site at 3301 South Greenfield Road, on the southeast corner of Greenfield and Pecos Roads in the East Valley of metro Phoenix, at an elevation of 1,269 feet.

Temple Number
The Church's 142nd operating temple at its dedication. It was the fourth in Arizona, after Mesa in 1927, Snowflake in 2002, and The Gila Valley in 2010.

Announced
, by Thomas S. Monson, together with a temple for the Gila Valley. They were the first temples he announced after becoming Church president that February, and the Gilbert temple was meant to take pressure off the Mesa Arizona Temple.

Groundbreaking
, presided over by Elder Claudio R. M. Costa of the Presidency of the Seventy, who also offered the prayer dedicating the site. Thousands attended on a clear, warm morning, and the services were carried to local stake centers.

Dedicated
, by Thomas S. Monson, in three sessions broadcast to meetinghouses across Arizona. Monson gave the dedicatory prayer in the second session; Henry B. Eyring, his First Counselor, gave it in the other two.

Architecture
Architekton of Tempe, architect; Okland Construction Company of Tempe, contractor. Light cream precast concrete with white quartz, 85,326 square feet on a footprint of 193 by 165 feet, with a single center spire carrying the angel Moroni 195 feet above the ground.

Ordinance Rooms
Three instruction rooms, seven sealing rooms, and one baptistry.

First Temple President
David E. LeSueur, with Nancy R. LeSueur as matron, 2014–2016. He had earlier presided over the Philippines Manila Mission.

Construction Story

  • By the time it opened, 407,020 people had walked through it. The public open house ran to , excluding Sundays, and the guest list included Governor Jan Brewer, Senators John McCain and Jeff Flake, and retired Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor.
  • The angel Moroni went up on , set in place by crane in front of a crowd of hundreds.
  • The night before the dedication, about 12,000 young people from the district put on a cultural celebration at Discovery Park in Gilbert, and it rained on them. At the cornerstone ceremony the next morning, Monson told the crowd, "There is sunshine in my soul today."

Symbolism & Design

  • The interior is built around the agave. Holdman Studios of Lehi, Utah, designed and made the art glass from the agave plant and its flower, and the color scheme runs to blue, green, and earth tones.
  • The murals are by Howard Lyon, a painter from neighboring Queen Creek.
  • The interior stone is limestone in three varieties: Honey Gold Light, Tiberias Gold, and Basar Lux. The woodwork is eucalyptus and white oak, and the chandeliers came from Swarovski Architectural Lighting.

Trivia

  • For 75 years Mesa was the only temple in Arizona, from its 1927 dedication until Snowflake opened in 2002.
  • The area's first stake was organized in Gilbert in 1975. By the 2010 groundbreaking there were seven stakes in Gilbert alone.
  • How far is Mesa? A Church magazine report on the 2008 announcement said about nine miles. At the groundbreaking, Elder William R. Walker of the Temple Department put it at about 14.
  • Henry B. Eyring has family roots in this story. His grandfather, Edward Christian Eyring, was among the Latter-day Saint colonists who came out of Mexico in 1912.
  • At dedication the district covered 26 stakes and about 100,000 members, in Gilbert, Tempe, Chandler, Queen Creek, Florence, Globe, and Maricopa.

FAQ

I get this one a lot, and I thought about it before I drew the first one. These are architectural drawings of a building, not anything that happens inside it. No slogans, nothing that turns the temple into a punchline. If you'd put a framed temple photo in your living room, this is that same idea on cotton.

No. We are an independent company. Peculiar People is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Our goal with our clothing is for it to be seen. Which means it also needs to be your go-to comfort clothing.

It's made to be the first thing you grab when you want to be comfortable, and the first clothing you'll be prompted to wear.

Our prints are made to last. To make sure they do, use no bleach and no fabric softener, which coats the fibers and dulls the print over time. Don't iron over the design. You can wash it before the first wear to get the loose surface dye off, but you don't have to.

It's a men's cut. If you normally wear a women's medium, order a small for a fitted look or a medium if you want it roomier. The size guide video shows a woman at 5'9" in a small and a man at 6'4" in a large.

Original line art, made here, one temple at a time. Every drawing gets checked against verified references before we add it to our collection.

Yes. Ward and stake temple trips, mission reunions, family reunions. Email support@peculiarpeopleco.com with the temple, the garment, and roughly how many people, and I'll get back to you with a price.

An SVG of the temple line art for $4.95. Same drawing that goes on the shirts. It's a vector, so it scales to any size without going soft at the edges, and it opens in Cricut, Illustrator, Figma, or anything else that reads vectors.
