Peculiar People started in 2023 while I was serving a mission in San Antonio, Texas. The name comes from Peter's description of the Saints as "a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people" — members who keep their covenants without making a show of it, and are fine looking a little old-fashioned for it.

We make apparel with original line art of Latter-day Saint temples, made one temple at a time and printed on heavier, better-made garments. Most members want to talk about the gospel but don't know how to open the door. A shirt someone asks about is an easier start than a knock on one.

From the Founders

You wear Peculiar People because it reminds you of an important moment. The day you got married, where you got an answer to a prayer you needed answered, where you first felt something you couldn't explain away.

Every design we make is made to do two things:

  1. Remind you of something special to you
  2. Prompt others to ask you about it

In order for this to work, our clothing needs to be the first thing you reach for, which is why we have worked hard to ensure our fabrics, build quality, and prints are premium and extremely comfortable.

The more you wear, the more you share. All it takes is one question. "What's that on your shirt?"

, as the first of the smaller temples President Gordon B. Hinckley had introduced earlier that year.

Two instruction rooms, two sealing rooms, one baptistry.

Construction Story

  • This was the first of the small temples, a design President Gordon B. Hinckley announced in 1997 to put temples within reach of members far from the existing ones.
  • The plan left out the laundry, the cafeteria and other space not needed for ordinances. That made the building far smaller and much faster to put up.
  • It went from groundbreaking to dedication in just over eight months, faster than any temple built before it.
  • As first completed, at 7,000 square feet, it had less than half the floor space of an ordinary meetinghouse.

Symbolism & Design

  • The exterior is clad in Turkish off white marble.
  • The first angel Moroni statue placed here was white fiberglass and stood six feet tall, against the twelve foot gold leafed figures used on earlier temples.

Changes Over Time

  • The temple was enlarged and remodeled in 2002, growing from 7,000 to 11,225 square feet, with a second instruction room and a second sealing room added. Temple president Lisle G. Adams explained the reason plainly: "The facilities we had were just not adequate to take care of the work that was being done."
  • President Hinckley rededicated the enlarged building on , having dedicated the original four years earlier.
  • The white statue was later replaced with a gold leafed one.

Trivia

  • It was the first of the small temples, a design the Church has used many times since.
  • The temple was dedicated less than ten months after it was announced.

FAQ

I get this one a lot, and I thought about it before I drew the first one. These are architectural drawings of a building, not anything that happens inside it. No slogans, nothing that turns the temple into a punchline. If you'd put a framed temple photo in your living room, this is that same idea on cotton.

No. We are an independent company. Peculiar People is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Our goal with our clothing is for it to be seen. Which means it also needs to be your go-to comfort clothing.

It's made to be the first thing you grab when you want to be comfortable, and the first clothing you'll be prompted to wear.

Our prints are made to last. To make sure they do, use no bleach and no fabric softener, which coats the fibers and dulls the print over time. Don't iron over the design. You can wash it before the first wear to get the loose surface dye off, but you don't have to.

It's a men's cut. If you normally wear a women's medium, order a small for a fitted look or a medium if you want it roomier. The size guide video shows a woman at 5'9" in a small and a man at 6'4" in a large.

Original line art, made here, one temple at a time. Every drawing gets checked against verified references before we add it to our collection.

Yes. Ward and stake temple trips, mission reunions, family reunions. Email support@peculiarpeopleco.com with the temple, the garment, and roughly how many people, and I'll get back to you with a price.

An SVG of the temple line art for $4.95. Same drawing that goes on the shirts. It's a vector, so it scales to any size without going soft at the edges, and it opens in Cricut, Illustrator, Figma, or anything else that reads vectors.
