Peculiar People started in 2023 while I was serving a mission in San Antonio, Texas. The name comes from Peter's description of the Saints as "a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people" — members who keep their covenants without making a show of it, and are fine looking a little old-fashioned for it.

We make apparel with original line art of Latter-day Saint temples, made one temple at a time and printed on heavier, better-made garments. Most members want to talk about the gospel but don't know how to open the door. A shirt someone asks about is an easier start than a knock on one.

The Sweatshirt

You put on a Peculiar People sweatshirt because it reminds you why we're all here. Because that building is where you were sealed to your spouse, where you got an answer to a prayer you'd been carrying for years, where you first felt something you couldn't explain away. A stepping stone. A day you'll never forget.

You put it on because you want to share that with someone. Because gospel conversations are hard to start. Harder than they were on your mission, when the whole day was built around them.

It's the new white shirt and tie. The new dress. The new name tag you don't need a calling to wear. A sweatshirt you may even feel prompted to wear some days.

That's why I started this company. It doesn't take much for someone who has been prepared to tap you on the shoulder and ask a question that changes the direction of their life. No argument, no pitch, no lesson plan. Just an opening.

And you keep it on because it's premium heavyweight fleece with a ringspun cotton face, garment-dyed to that soft, worn-in vintage look you'd wear even if it said nothing at all.

Oakland California Temple

Location
Oakland, California. The temple stands on an 18.1 acre hillside site at 4770 Lincoln Avenue in the Oakland hills, with commanding views west across San Francisco Bay.

The 13th dedicated temple, and the second built in California.

Architecture
Designed by Harold W. Burton, who spent a career designing buildings for the Church and worked the idiom of the early 1960s into this one. Reinforced concrete faced with Sierra white granite quarried at Raymond, California. About 95,000 square feet, with five spires: a central tower reaching 170 feet surrounded by four smaller ones.

Four instruction rooms, seven sealing rooms, and one baptistry.

Construction Story
  • The building was completed on , a little over two years after ground was broken.
  • The public open house ran through and was extended an additional week. About 347,000 people toured the temple.
  • Its dedication made California the second state in the country with more than one temple.
  • The 2018 renovation drew materials from across the world: flooring stone from Greece, China, and Georgia, primavera wood from South America for the celestial room doors, ribbon striped mahogany from Africa in some sealing rooms, and custom bronze hardware made from Indian brass.

Symbolism & Design
  • The five spire arrangement is the building's signature, and it is a deliberate borrowing. Burton's design points toward sacred architecture of the Far East, the Taj Mahal and Angkor Wat among them, chosen to reflect the range of people living in Northern California.
  • Two granite relief panels, each about 35 feet by 13 feet, carry the building's narrative. The north panel depicts Christ teaching, drawn from Matthew 5 and 6. The south panel depicts the resurrected Savior appearing to the Nephites, from 3 Nephi 11.
  • A cascading waterfall and creek style water feature runs through the gardens at the front of the temple.

Changes Over Time
  • The original waterfall was removed in 1969 because the leaks could not be repaired. Modern materials made it possible to restore it during the renovation fifty years later.
  • The temple closed in February 2018 for a renovation of about 16 months, followed by a public open house through .

Trivia
  • It was the first temple in the United States designed for a film presentation of the endowment, and the first with multiple instruction rooms feeding into a central celestial room. Nearly every temple built since has followed that plan.
  • The front doors malfunctioned shortly after the 1964 dedication, and patrons used a side entrance for years afterward.
  • The interstake center on the grounds, built in 1959, once served as the practice facility for the Golden State Warriors.

Is it appropriate to wear a temple on a shirt?

I get this one a lot, and I thought about it before I drew the first one. These are architectural drawings of a building, not anything that happens inside it. No slogans, nothing that turns the temple into a punchline. If you'd put a framed temple photo in your living room, this is that same idea on cotton.

No. We are an independent company. Peculiar People is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Our goal with our clothing is for it to be seen. Which means it also needs to be your go-to comfort clothing.

It's made to be the first thing you grab when you want to be comfortable, and the first clothing you'll be prompted to wear.

Our prints are made to last. To esure No bleach, and no fabric softener, which coats the fibers and dulls the print over time. Don't iron over the design. You can wash it before the first wear to get the loose surface dye off, but you don't have to.

It's a men's cut. If you normally wear a women's medium, order a small for a fitted look or a medium if you want it roomier. The size guide video shows a woman at 5'9" in a small and a man at 6'4" in a large.
