Peculiar People started in 2023 while I was serving a mission in San Antonio, Texas. The name comes from Peter's description of the Saints as "a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people" — members who keep their covenants without making a show of it, and are fine looking a little old-fashioned for it.

We make apparel with original line art of Latter-day Saint temples, made one temple at a time and printed on heavier, better-made garments. Most members want to talk about the gospel but don't know how to open the door. A shirt someone asks about is an easier start than a knock on one.

The Hoodie

You put on a Peculiar People hoodie because it reminds you why we're all here. Because that building is where you were sealed to your spouse, where you got an answer to a prayer you'd been carrying for years, where you first felt something you couldn't explain away. A stepping stone. A day you'll never forget.

You put it on because you want to share that with someone. Because gospel conversations are hard to start. Harder than they were on your mission, when the whole day was built around them.

It's the new white shirt and tie. The new dress. The new name tag you don't need a calling to wear. A hoodie you may even feel prompted to wear some days.

That's why I started this company. It doesn't take much for someone who has been prepared to tap you on the shoulder and ask a question that changes the direction of their life. No argument, no pitch, no lesson plan. Just an opening.

And you keep it on because it's premium heavyweight fleece with a ringspun cotton face, garment-dyed to that soft, worn-in vintage look you'd wear even if it said nothing at all.

Location
San Antonio, Texas. The temple sits on about 5.5 acres atop a prominent hill in the Stone Oak area of north San Antonio, at an elevation of 1,225 feet.

Architecture
Rehler, Vaughn & Koone, architects; Jacobsen Construction, contractor. Traditional single-spire design with a granite exterior, 97 feet wide by 191 feet long, rising 115 feet to the top of the angel Moroni statue, with approximately 16,800 square feet of floor area.

Ordinance Rooms
Two instruction rooms in a two-stage progressive design, two sealing rooms, and a baptistry with the font resting on twelve oxen.

First Temple President
A. Ray Otte, called as the temple's first president for its 2005 opening.

Construction Story
  • Local members did not just watch the temple rise. Members of one Spanish-speaking branch came to the site and washed construction bricks, and members across the area hand-delivered 16-page open house brochures through their neighborhoods.
  • The 13-foot gold-leafed angel Moroni statue was placed atop the spire on September 21, 2004, eight months before the dedication.
  • The night before the dedication, local youth performed the Heart of Texas Youth Jubilee, a cultural celebration held at the Alamodome.

Symbolism & Design
  • The temple stands on one of the highest points in the area, and its lighted spire can be seen from roughly 30 miles away.
  • Every window carries art glass, and the grounds feature water features and landscaping chosen to reflect the rugged beauty of south Texas.
  • At the dedication, Elder Charles Didier called the hilltop setting deliberate, noting that temples built on elevated ground prompt elevated thoughts.

Trivia
  • It was the fourth temple built in Texas, following Dallas, Houston, and Lubbock.
  • The three-week open house drew 69,679 visitors between April 16 and May 7, 2005, with members organizing chartered buses from a local high school to handle the crowds.
  • At its dedication the temple served eleven stakes and two districts across southwest Texas.

Is it appropriate to wear a temple on a shirt?

I get this one a lot, and I thought about it before I drew the first one. These are architectural drawings of a building, not anything that happens inside it. No slogans, nothing that turns the temple into a punchline. If you'd put a framed temple photo in your living room, this is that same idea on cotton.

No. We are an independent company. Peculiar People is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Our goal with our clothing is for it to be seen. Which means it also needs to be your go-to comfort clothing.

It's made to be the first thing you grab when you want to be comfortable, and the first clothing you'll be prompted to wear.

Our prints are made to last. To esure No bleach, and no fabric softener, which coats the fibers and dulls the print over time. Don't iron over the design. You can wash it before the first wear to get the loose surface dye off, but you don't have to.

It's a men's cut. If you normally wear a women's medium, order a small for a fitted look or a medium if you want it roomier. The size guide video shows a woman at 5'9" in a small and a man at 6'4" in a large.
