Peculiar People started in 2023 while I was serving a mission in San Antonio, Texas. The name comes from Peter's description of the Saints as "a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people" — members who keep their covenants without making a show of it, and are fine looking a little old-fashioned for it.

We make apparel with original line art of Latter-day Saint temples, made one temple at a time and printed on heavier, better-made garments. Most members want to talk about the gospel but don't know how to open the door. A shirt someone asks about is an easier start than a knock on one.

From the Founders

You wear Peculiar People because it reminds you of an important moment. The day you got married, where you got an answer to a prayer you needed answered, where you first felt something you couldn't explain away.

Every design we make is made to do two things:

  1. Remind you of something special to you
  2. Prompt others to ask you about it

In order for this to work, our clothing needs to be the first thing you reach for, which is why we have worked hard to ensure our fabrics, build quality, and prints are premium and extremely comfortable.

The more you wear, the more you share. All it takes is one question. "What's that on your shirt?"

Evan & Bailee, founders of Peculiar People

Colesville, New York

The Township
Colesville split off from Windsor in 1821 and had about 2,400 people by 1830. Harpursville, Nineveh and Colesville were its villages, and the Susquehanna River ran through its eastern side.

Joseph Knight Sr.
A farmer and miller who moved his family in 1811 to the part of Windsor that later became Colesville. He hired Joseph Smith as a day laborer in 1826, and later, while the Book of Mormon was being translated in Harmony, he brought Joseph food and paper.

The Branch
The Knights and their neighbors became one of the Church's first branches, possibly the very first. Hyrum Smith presided over it for several months from late 1830. Newel Knight, Joseph Sr.'s son, led it after him.

What Happened Here

  • : Days after the Church was organized, Joseph stopped at the Knight farm and preached to the family and their friends. Newel Knight came back from praying alone in the woods seized by a fit. Joseph commanded the devil, in the name of Jesus Christ, to depart from him, and the fit stopped. Joseph called it the first miracle performed in the Church.
  • : Joseph and others had dammed a stream for a baptism, and someone tore the dam out overnight. Early on the 28th the believers rebuilt it, and Oliver Cowdery baptized thirteen people in the pool, Emma Smith and Joseph and Polly Knight among them. Men on the bank jeered, then followed the group back to the Knight house, where they grew into a crowd of about fifty.
  • : Arrested that evening and acquitted in Chenango County the next day, Joseph was arrested again by a Broome County constable and held overnight at a Colesville tavern. Justice Joel K. Noble and at least two other justices heard the case and discharged him.
  • : Told by revelation to gather to Ohio, the branch sold what it could and set out together, poor families included. In Ohio they were sent to Leman Copley's 759-acre farm in Thompson. Copley soon went back on his offer and evicted them.
  • : About sixty branch members reached Kaw Township in Jackson County, Missouri, roughly a thousand miles from Thompson. On August 2, Joseph and twelve men of the branch laid the first log of the first house in Zion. Within the week Polly Knight had died, the first Church member to die in Zion.

On the Map

  1. Nineveh is probably where Joseph worked for Joseph Knight Sr. in 1826 and 1827. Sources say only that the work was likely near Nineveh, so the marker shows the hamlet, not a known farm or building.
  2. The Joseph Knight Sr. Home sits half a mile south of Nineveh. The Church doesn't own or run it, and docents give tours. The June 1830 baptisms were in a dammed stream that ran through the Knight farm or close by. No source names the stream, and where it ran isn't known.
  3. Nathaniel Cole's tavern stood near where Colesville Road now meets Watrous Road, and pieces of its foundation remain. BYU historians call it the probable place of Joseph's June 30, 1830 trial. Church sources say only "a Colesville tavern," so this spot isn't certain.

Trivia

  • Joseph Knight considered Joseph Smith "the best hand he ever hired."
  • When snow made the road to Harmony hard going, Joseph sometimes borrowed the Knights' sleigh to go courting Emma.
  • Peter, James and John, an 1842 letter of Joseph's says, were heard "in the wilderness between Harmony, Susquehanna county, and Colesville, Broome county, on the Susquehanna river." Scripture gives no closer location than that. It names a river, not a spot.

FAQ

I get this one a lot, and I thought about it before I drew the first one. These are architectural drawings of a building, not anything that happens inside it. No slogans, nothing that turns the temple into a punchline. If you'd put a framed temple photo in your living room, this is that same idea on cotton.

No. We are an independent company. Peculiar People is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Our prints are made to last. To make sure they do, use no bleach and no fabric softener, which coats the fibers and dulls the print over time. Don't iron over the design. You can wash it before the first wear to get the loose surface dye off, but you don't have to.

Original line art, made by us, one at a time. Every drawing gets checked against verified references before we add it to our collection.

Yes. Ward and stake temple trips, mission reunions, family reunions. Email support@peculiarpeopleco.com with the temple, the garment, and roughly how many people, and I'll get back to you with a price.

An SVG of the temple line art for $4.95. Same drawing that goes on the shirts. It's a vector, so it scales to any size without going soft at the edges, and it opens in Cricut, Illustrator, Figma, or anything else that reads vectors.
