Peculiar People started in 2023 while I was serving a mission in San Antonio, Texas. The name comes from Peter's description of the Saints as "a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people" — members who keep their covenants without making a show of it, and are fine looking a little old-fashioned for it.

We make apparel with original line art of Latter-day Saint temples, made one temple at a time and printed on heavier, better-made garments. Most members want to talk about the gospel but don't know how to open the door. A shirt someone asks about is an easier start than a knock on one.

From the Founders

You wear Peculiar People because it reminds you of an important moment. The day you got married, where you got an answer to a prayer you needed answered, where you first felt something you couldn't explain away.

Every design we make is made to do two things:

  1. Remind you of something special to you
  2. Prompt others to ask you about it

In order for this to work, our clothing needs to be the first thing you reach for, which is why we have worked hard to ensure our fabrics, build quality, and prints are premium and extremely comfortable.

The more you wear, the more you share. All it takes is one question. "What's that on your shirt?"

Hiram, Ohio

The Johnsons
John and Elsa Johnson came from Vermont in 1818 and built up a big farm with fields, pasture and a dairy. Their son Lyman joined the Church in February 1831. John and Elsa read the Book of Mormon with their minister, went to Kirtland to meet Joseph Smith, and Elsa came home with her rheumatic arm healed. They were baptized soon after.

The House
Two stories and five bedrooms, built in 1828. When it went up it was one of the finest houses in the area.

Why Joseph Came
He wanted a quiet place to get on with his revision of the Bible. Through the winter he and Sidney Rigdon, his scribe, worked in an upstairs room, and much of what Joseph received in Hiram grew out of that work.

What Happened Here

  • : Joseph and Emma moved in with their adopted twins, Joseph and Julia, four months old. Sidney and Phebe Rigdon and their six children took a log cabin across the road.
  • : Elders met at the house in four special conferences and voted to publish Joseph's revelations as the Book of Commandments. The conference called them "worth to the Church the riches of the whole Earth." The Lord's preface to the book, now Doctrine and Covenants 1, came on the first day.
  • : A revelation set the Bible work aside and sent Joseph and Sidney out to preach, to answer letters Ezra Booth had published in a local paper. On , another told them to go back to translating.
  • : With about twelve men in the upstairs room, Joseph and Sidney saw the vision of the kingdoms of glory, now Doctrine and Covenants 76. It came while they were working on John 5:29, about the resurrection of the just and the unjust.
  • : A mob of local militiamen broke into the house at night, dragged Joseph from his bed, and tarred and feathered him and Sidney in a meadow some distance from the house. Emma and Elsa Johnson worked through the night to clean off the tar. The next day Joseph preached as usual and baptized three people. Both twins had measles. The boy, Joseph, died later that week.
  • : The Smiths moved back to Kirtland, a year to the day after they came. In the spring of 1834 John Johnson sold most of his land, gave $3,000 to the Church, and moved the family to Kirtland, where they ran an inn near the Whitney store.

On the Map

  1. The John and Elsa Johnson Home stands on Pioneer Trail. Joseph preached from its front steps to people standing in the yard. The Church restored it to its original look, and President Gordon B. Hinckley dedicated it on . That service was held at the Hiram Ward meetinghouse, just west of the farm, an alfalfa field away.

Trivia

  • Some elders at the November conference questioned the "imperfections" in the revelations' language. A revelation given there, now section 67, challenged the wisest of them to write one as good as the least of Joseph's.
  • When the 1832 vision closed, Sidney looked limp and pale. Joseph smiled and said, "Sidney is not used to it as I am."
  • The handwritten book the conference approved, now called Revelation Book 1, left Hiram with Oliver Cowdery and John Whitmer in November 1831 and reached Independence in January. There they and the printer, William W. Phelps, marked corrections and verse numbers straight onto its pages and set the Book of Commandments from it. Later it went back to Ohio and served as printer's copy a second time, for the 1835 Doctrine and Covenants.

FAQ

I get this one a lot, and I thought about it before I drew the first one. These are architectural drawings of a building, not anything that happens inside it. No slogans, nothing that turns the temple into a punchline. If you'd put a framed temple photo in your living room, this is that same idea on cotton.

No. We are an independent company. Peculiar People is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Our prints are made to last. To make sure they do, use no bleach and no fabric softener, which coats the fibers and dulls the print over time. Don't iron over the design. You can wash it before the first wear to get the loose surface dye off, but you don't have to.

Original line art, made by us, one at a time. Every drawing gets checked against verified references before we add it to our collection.

Yes. Ward and stake temple trips, mission reunions, family reunions. Email support@peculiarpeopleco.com with the temple, the garment, and roughly how many people, and I'll get back to you with a price.

An SVG of the temple line art for $4.95. Same drawing that goes on the shirts. It's a vector, so it scales to any size without going soft at the edges, and it opens in Cricut, Illustrator, Figma, or anything else that reads vectors.
