Peculiar People started in 2023 while I was serving a mission in San Antonio, Texas. The name comes from Peter's description of the Saints as "a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people" — members who keep their covenants without making a show of it, and are fine looking a little old-fashioned for it.

We make apparel with original line art of Latter-day Saint temples, made one temple at a time and printed on heavier, better-made garments. Most members want to talk about the gospel but don't know how to open the door. A shirt someone asks about is an easier start than a knock on one.

From the Founders

You wear Peculiar People because it reminds you of an important moment. The day you got married, where you got an answer to a prayer you needed answered, where you first felt something you couldn't explain away.

Every design we make is made to do two things:

  1. Remind you of something special to you
  2. Prompt others to ask you about it

In order for this to work, our clothing needs to be the first thing you reach for, which is why we have worked hard to ensure our fabrics, build quality, and prints are premium and extremely comfortable.

The more you wear, the more you share. All it takes is one question. "What's that on your shirt?"

Rexburg Idaho Temple

Location
Rexburg, Idaho. It sits on a 10-acre hilltop site directly south of the Brigham Young University–Idaho campus, at an elevation of 5,087 feet.

Temple Number
The Church's 125th operating temple at its dedication, and the third in Idaho, after Idaho Falls and Boise.

Announced
, by the First Presidency in a letter to local priesthood leaders.

Groundbreaking
. Elder John H. Groberg of the Presidency of the Seventy presided and dedicated the site. About 8,000 residents and students came.

Dedicated
, by President Thomas S. Monson, in four sessions attended by more than 7,300 members. President Gordon B. Hinckley had planned to dedicate it on February 3. He died on January 27, the date moved back one week, and President Monson described the dedication as his first official act as President of the Church.

Architecture
Designed by Architectural Nexus, with Bob Petroff as architect, and built by Jacobsen Construction Co. The exterior is precast concrete with a quartz rock finish; the quartz was mined in Washington state, mixed into the concrete, and sandblasted to expose it. 57,504 square feet, 85 feet wide by 190 feet long, with a single spire over the front entrance. It stands 168 feet 9 inches to the top of the angel Moroni statue.

Ordinance Rooms
Four instruction rooms, five sealing rooms, and a baptistry.

First Temple President
Val R. Christensen, 2008–2010.

Construction Story

  • The walls came out of 45 molds. Those molds produced 637 precast panels, the retaining wall's included, and the exterior panels weigh 2,600 tons.
  • The 10-foot-8-inch angel Moroni statue went up on the spire in the rain on . That is the anniversary of the date Joseph Smith gave for Moroni's first visit to him, in 1823.
  • The public open house ran from , to , closed on Sundays. More than 200,000 people toured the building.

Symbolism & Design

  • Utah artist Tom Holdman made the temple's 700 art-glass windowpanes. Most carry a wheat stalk, for the farming that surrounds Rexburg.
  • The original murals are by local artist Leon Parson.
  • The wood trim was imported from Africa. The stone and tile came from Israel.

Trivia

  • Rexburg is getting a second temple. Announced in October 2021 as the Rexburg North Idaho Temple, it was renamed the Teton River Idaho Temple on , and is under construction on the north side of town.
  • The oxen under the baptismal font are fiberglass.
  • Dedication morning brought fog thick enough that the temple could not be seen from a short distance. It kept President Monson's plane from landing in Idaho Falls, so it set down in Pocatello and his party drove the rest of the way. By the middle of the first session, sunlight was coming through the art glass.

FAQ

I get this one a lot, and I thought about it before I drew the first one. These are architectural drawings of a building, not anything that happens inside it. No slogans, nothing that turns the temple into a punchline. If you'd put a framed temple photo in your living room, this is that same idea on cotton.

No. We are an independent company. Peculiar People is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Our goal with our clothing is for it to be seen. Which means it also needs to be your go-to comfort clothing.

It's made to be the first thing you grab when you want to be comfortable, and the first clothing you'll be prompted to wear.

Our prints are made to last. To make sure they do, use no bleach and no fabric softener, which coats the fibers and dulls the print over time. Don't iron over the design. You can wash it before the first wear to get the loose surface dye off, but you don't have to.

It's a men's cut. If you normally wear a women's medium, order a small for a fitted look or a medium if you want it roomier. The size guide video shows a woman at 5'9" in a small and a man at 6'4" in a large.

Original line art, made here, one temple at a time. Every drawing gets checked against verified references before we add it to our collection.

Yes. Ward and stake temple trips, mission reunions, family reunions. Email support@peculiarpeopleco.com with the temple, the garment, and roughly how many people, and I'll get back to you with a price.

An SVG of the temple line art for $4.95. Same drawing that goes on the shirts. It's a vector, so it scales to any size without going soft at the edges, and it opens in Cricut, Illustrator, Figma, or anything else that reads vectors.
