Peculiar People started in 2023 while I was serving a mission in San Antonio, Texas. The name comes from Peter's description of the Saints as "a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people" — members who keep their covenants without making a show of it, and are fine looking a little old-fashioned for it.

We make apparel with original line art of Latter-day Saint temples, made one temple at a time and printed on heavier, better-made garments. Most members want to talk about the gospel but don't know how to open the door. A shirt someone asks about is an easier start than a knock on one.

From the Founders

You wear Peculiar People because it reminds you of an important moment. The day you got married, where you got an answer to a prayer you needed answered, where you first felt something you couldn't explain away.

Every design we make is made to do two things:

  1. Remind you of something special to you
  2. Prompt others to ask you about it

In order for this to work, our clothing needs to be the first thing you reach for, which is why we have worked hard to ensure our fabrics, build quality, and prints are premium and extremely comfortable.

The more you wear, the more you share. All it takes is one question. "What's that on your shirt?"

Bountiful Utah Temple

Location
Bountiful, Utah. The temple stands at 640 South Bountiful Boulevard, in the foothills of the east bench overlooking the Great Salt Lake, about nine miles north of Salt Lake City, at an elevation of 5,160 feet.

Temple Number
The 47th operating temple of the Church, the eighth in Utah, and the first in Davis County.

Announced
, by a First Presidency letter to local leaders in Davis County: "We have now determined to undertake the construction of a temple on this site." The Church had announced the purchase of the hillside property for a possible temple on .

Groundbreaking
. President Ezra Taft Benson presided, with his counselors President Gordon B. Hinckley and President Thomas S. Monson participating. About 7,500 people attended on the site and 2,500 more watched by video.

Dedicated
through , by President Howard W. Hunter, in 28 sessions. President Hunter attended six of the sessions and spoke in four; Apostles read his dedicatory prayer in the remainder.

Architecture
A modern single-spire design by architect of record Allen B. Erekson, with Keith Stepan as project architect. The exterior is Bethel white granite quarried near Sharon, Vermont. The temple encloses 104,000 square feet and rises 176 feet to the angel Moroni statue atop its spire.

Ordinance Rooms
Four instruction rooms, eight sealing rooms, and a baptistry.

First Temple President
Harold C. Yancey, 1994 to 1997.

Construction Story

  • The groundbreaking crowd was so large that President Hinckley compared it to "the days of King Benjamin," when the people gathered around the temple by families.
  • Architect Allen B. Erekson stated the design goal plainly: "What we are trying to accomplish in the Bountiful Utah Temple is to have a level of elegance that doesn't distract from the Spirit."
  • During the public open house, November 5 through December 17, 1994, exactly 870,361 visitors toured the temple, assisted by some 45,000 volunteers.

Symbolism & Design

  • Exterior detailing represents the sun, moon, and stars, a reference to the scriptural descriptions of the three degrees of glory.
  • The art glass, created by Arthur Stern Studio of Oakland, California, carries a Jacob's Ladder motif of ascending detail, with beveled crystal that refracts sunlight into rainbow effects inside.
  • Interior colors deepen and lighten by floor: rich, warm tones on the lower levels give way to lighter, more elegant tones as one ascends.

Changes Over Time

  • Lightning struck the angel Moroni statue on May 22, 2016, and a replacement statue was set atop the spire on June 1, 2016.

Trivia

  • The 28 dedicatory sessions drew 201,655 attendees, reported as the largest attendance at any temple dedication in the history of the Church.
  • Bountiful was one of only two temples dedicated by President Howard W. Hunter, whose presidency lasted nine months; he died less than two months after the dedication.
  • The temple's floor plan was adapted for the Mount Timpanogos Utah Temple, dedicated the following year.

FAQ

I get this one a lot, and I thought about it before I drew the first one. These are architectural drawings of a building, not anything that happens inside it. No slogans, nothing that turns the temple into a punchline. If you'd put a framed temple photo in your living room, this is that same idea on cotton.

No. We are an independent company. Peculiar People is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Our goal with our clothing is for it to be seen. Which means it also needs to be your go-to comfort clothing.

It's made to be the first thing you grab when you want to be comfortable, and the first clothing you'll be prompted to wear.

Our prints are made to last. To make sure they do, use no bleach and no fabric softener, which coats the fibers and dulls the print over time. Don't iron over the design. You can wash it before the first wear to get the loose surface dye off, but you don't have to.

It's a men's cut. If you normally wear a women's medium, order a small for a fitted look or a medium if you want it roomier. The size guide video shows a woman at 5'9" in a small and a man at 6'4" in a large.

Original line art, made here, one temple at a time. Every drawing gets checked against verified references before we add it to our collection.

Yes. Ward and stake temple trips, mission reunions, family reunions. Email support@peculiarpeopleco.com with the temple, the garment, and roughly how many people, and I'll get back to you with a price.

An SVG of the temple line art for $4.95. Same drawing that goes on the shirts. It's a vector, so it scales to any size without going soft at the edges, and it opens in Cricut, Illustrator, Figma, or anything else that reads vectors.
