Peculiar People started in 2023 while I was serving a mission in San Antonio, Texas. The name comes from Peter's description of the Saints as "a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people" — members who keep their covenants without making a show of it, and are fine looking a little old-fashioned for it.

We make apparel with original line art of Latter-day Saint temples, made one temple at a time and printed on heavier, better-made garments. Most members want to talk about the gospel but don't know how to open the door. A shirt someone asks about is an easier start than a knock on one.

From the Founders

You wear Peculiar People because it reminds you of an important moment. The day you got married, where you got an answer to a prayer you needed answered, where you first felt something you couldn't explain away.

Every design we make is made to do two things:

  1. Remind you of something special to you
  2. Prompt others to ask you about it

In order for this to work, our clothing needs to be the first thing you reach for, which is why we have worked hard to ensure our fabrics, build quality, and prints are premium and extremely comfortable.

The more you wear, the more you share. All it takes is one question. "What's that on your shirt?"

Jordan River Utah Temple

Location
South Jordan, Utah. The temple takes its name from the Jordan River, which runs through the valley below it, rather than from the city it stands in. The site was donated to the Church.

Temple Number
The 20th dedicated temple.

Announced
, by President Spencer W. Kimball.

Groundbreaking
. President Spencer W. Kimball presided, before a crowd of about 10,000.

Dedicated
to , by President Marion G. Romney of the First Presidency, in 15 sessions.

Rededicated
, by President Henry B. Eyring, following a two year renovation.

Architecture
Cast stone set with white marble chips. The tower looks like the same material but is built of cemlite, a fiberglass product chosen to reduce weight. 148,236 square feet, rising 219 feet to a single attached central spire with an angel Moroni statue.

Ordinance Rooms
Six instruction rooms, sixteen sealing rooms, one baptistry.

Construction Story

  • This was the first temple of the modern era built entirely with donated funds. By the May 1979 deadline, members of the district had raised 110 percent of the amount needed, and had done it ahead of schedule.
  • Rather than turn the first earth with a ceremonial shovel, President Kimball put on a hard hat, climbed onto a front end loader and scooped it himself, in keeping with his counsel to lengthen our stride.
  • The ground the temple stands on was given to the Church rather than purchased.

Symbolism & Design

  • The exterior is cast stone studded with white marble chips, which catches light across the face of the building.
  • The tower had to be lighter than it looks. It is built of cemlite, a fiberglass material, so that the structure below could carry it.

Changes Over Time

  • The temple closed in 2016 for a full renovation, which brought seismic upgrades, modernized mechanical and electrical systems and a redesigned interior.
  • President Henry B. Eyring rededicated the building on .

Trivia

  • The building covers 148,236 square feet and holds sixteen sealing rooms.
  • About 10,000 people attended the groundbreaking in 1979.

FAQ

I get this one a lot, and I thought about it before I drew the first one. These are architectural drawings of a building, not anything that happens inside it. No slogans, nothing that turns the temple into a punchline. If you'd put a framed temple photo in your living room, this is that same idea on cotton.

No. We are an independent company. Peculiar People is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Our goal with our clothing is for it to be seen. Which means it also needs to be your go-to comfort clothing.

It's made to be the first thing you grab when you want to be comfortable, and the first clothing you'll be prompted to wear.

Our prints are made to last. To make sure they do, use no bleach and no fabric softener, which coats the fibers and dulls the print over time. Don't iron over the design. You can wash it before the first wear to get the loose surface dye off, but you don't have to.

It's a men's cut. If you normally wear a women's medium, order a small for a fitted look or a medium if you want it roomier. The size guide video shows a woman at 5'9" in a small and a man at 6'4" in a large.

Original line art, made here, one temple at a time. Every drawing gets checked against verified references before we add it to our collection.

Yes. Ward and stake temple trips, mission reunions, family reunions. Email support@peculiarpeopleco.com with the temple, the garment, and roughly how many people, and I'll get back to you with a price.

An SVG of the temple line art for $4.95. Same drawing that goes on the shirts. It's a vector, so it scales to any size without going soft at the edges, and it opens in Cricut, Illustrator, Figma, or anything else that reads vectors.
